Masumoto Family Farm
Suncrest Peaches (half flat)
$34
Unit price perMasumoto Family Farm is a certified organic, 80-acre operation in Del Rey, south of Fresno, now in its fourth generation. The farm was purchased in 1948 by Takashi "Joe" Masumoto after the family returned to California following their unjust incarceration during World War II — and has been growing exceptional stone fruit ever since. The Suncrest is the peach that made Masumoto famous — nearly bulldozed in 1987 because it didn't meet commercial standards, then saved by Mas Masumoto and immortalized in his book Epitaph for a Peach. It was later selected by Slow Food for its Ark of Taste, a distinction reserved for foods at risk of disappearing. Intensely juicy, deeply fragrant, and freestone — tasting unmistakably of what a peach is supposed to be.
This half flat is approximately 5 lbs, with an average of 10–12 peaches. Because these are harvested to order and ripened naturally on the tree, peach size varies week to week — expect anywhere from 7 to 16 peaches per half flat.
For the best eating experience, leave them on the counter for 1–2 days to finish ripening. Because fully ripe Suncrests bruise very easily, they must be harvested just before peak ripeness — a delicate balance that rewards a little patience. Stone fruit season is short — enjoy them while they last.
Order early this weekend for a full view of next week’s harvest.
