A delicious way to take care of our small blue planet

On April 6, 2026, for the first time in 58 years, four astronauts slipped behind the far side of the moon and watched Earth disappear. When they swung back around, they did something no human had done since 1972: they looked at our planet from a quarter million miles away and took a picture.

The timing, with Earth Day around the corner on April 22, feels like a gift. The original "Earthrise" photo from Apollo 8 in 1968 is often credited with launching the modern environmental movement — and the first Earth Day followed two years later. Now we get to see that view again, in color, with fresh eyes on an older planet.

From that far away, Earth is one thing. No borders, no shipping lanes, no supply chains. Just a small blue spaceship carrying everything we love and everything we need — our people, our cities, our wild places, our food.

Back down here, though, caring for that small blue spaceship gets complicated fast — especially at the grocery store. There's a dizzying array of ways to buy fruit: organic, conventional, CSAs, local farms, to name a few. It can be hard to know which choice is best — for flavor, for nutrition, for your wallet, and for the planet.

Regenerative Farming

Density, irrigation, soil health — the way fruit is cultivated shapes everything about the berry that ends up in your bowl.

Plants grown close together compete for sunlight, water, and nutrients. That stress blunts flavor and lowers nutritional value. It's one reason berries grown commercially for maximum yield often taste like almost nothing, while berries from small farms pack more punch per bite.

Regenerative farming — soil-building practices like minimal plowing, cover crops, and diverse planting — goes further. Produce grown this way has more antioxidants, more minerals like magnesium, calcium, potassium, and zinc, and more vitamins including B1, B12, C, E, and K.3

Short Supply Chains

The food on most American plates has traveled thousands of miles to get there. That system offers variety and convenience, but it comes with real costs — economic, environmental, and social.

When berries are grown thoughtfully, harvested nearby, and don't have to cross the country to reach you, something different happens. Money stays in the community. Food arrives fresher and more nutritious. The carbon footprint shrinks. Farmers, eaters, and the small blue spaceship we’re all riding on come out ahead.

Flavorful Plant Forward Eating

Plant-based diets can reduce food-related greenhouse gas emissions by up to 73% — and shifting even a few meals a week away from animal products adds up.4 The easiest way to eat more plants is to eat plants that actually taste good. When a strawberry explodes with flavor, you don't need to be convinced to finish the bowl. When blueberries taste like blueberries — not like faint, watery echoes of them — reaching for fruit instead of something processed isn't a sacrifice. It's just obvious.

We see flavor as the gateway. Nutritional density matters. Carbon footprint matters. But the simplest reason to eat more plants is that the right plants are genuinely delicious — and delicious food has a way of crowding out the stuff that isn't good for you or the planet.

Meaningful Connections to Your Food

Most of us have no idea where our food comes from. That's not a moral failing — it's just how the system was built. Decades of industrial agriculture optimized for scale and shelf life, not for the connection between a farmer and an eater.

When you know the farm, the variety, the person who grew it — food stops being a commodity and starts being something you pay more attention to. You eat differently when you know the story. You waste less. You appreciate more. And the farmers on the other end of that connection have a reason to keep doing things the right way, because someone is paying attention.
