Hosui is widely considered the finest-tasting Asian pear variety — developed in Japan in 1972 and now the most popular Asian pear grown in California. Large, round, and golden-russet skinned, with crisp, fine-grained flesh and an exceptional juiciness that earns its Japanese name: "much water." Murray Family Farms is a four-generation family farm outside Bakersfield, started in 1983 with beekeeping, then table grapes, then cherries — beginning as a roadside tent on Highway 58. Steven Murray Jr. joined the California Rare Fruit Growers at age 10 and has since traveled to 125 countries sourcing rare fruit, picking up six languages along the way.
